Systematic Botany - Weed Science

The content of the course includes the following:

1. Introduction and Basic Principles in Systematic Botany.

2. The concept of species in plants.

3. Taxonomic systems and Nomenclature.

4. Basic features of the seven Sums of plants (Schizophyta, Algae, Fungi, Lichens, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Spermatophyta).

5. Diagnostic features of the main families of the Greek flora.

6. Biology and Ecology of weeds (Classification of weeds, survival mechanisms, acclimation, spread, effects on biodiversity)

7. Interaction between weeds and crops (Competition / Allelopathy).

8. Weed management methods and systems 9. Integrated weed management

10. Herbicides and plants (Movement, metabolism etc.)

11. Herbicides and Soil

12. Metabolism of herbicides.

13. New trends and approaches in weed science

 

Laboratory exercises

• Principles of plant species sampling.

• Diagnostic features of important families of the Greek flora

• Plants Collection.

• Identification of the most important crop weeds

• Integrated pest management for weeds
